GARMONT TOURING BOOTS

Garmont states its mission as building the best boots on the planet. They started by introducing to free-heel boots what they say is the first one-piece overlap shell design called Power Wrap. This design closes the shin gap so the lower leg and instep make immediate contact with the shell. The result is better response and flex characteristics, according to Garmont. To further improve fit, the philosophy is to “pre-punch” the shells to provide room for common hot spots such as ankle bones, instep and the sixth toe.

A major breakthrough in boot lightness is the new Garmont Webframe, a design that reduces the shell to its critical elements to maintain a solid structure with ultra-light weight. By studying forces exerted on a boot during use, Garmont engineers were able to reinforce areas of stress but reduce material where possible for maximum strength without excess weight. The result is an organic-looking boot shell in two models.

Masterlite (New)
Sizes 24.0 – 29.5
Weight 1090 grams in size 27.5, Tech system ready

Literider (New)
Sizes 24.0 – 29.5
Weight 1290 grams in size 27.5
Slightly stiffer and heavier than Masterlite, aimed at mountaineers that want lightness but excellent downhill performance. Tech system ready.

TELEMARK

Power Wrap, multi-injection and anatomically shaped shells are found in the Telemark collection which has 3 new models this year (all women’s models). Boots are available for the traditional 75mm system or the Rottefella NTN (New Tele Norm) system. A new Ergo bellows design is wider and extends rearward for better ski control. It also has a separate, stiffer Power Rib injected at the crest of the bellows for abrasion resistance. To prevent snow and moisture from entering, a soft silicone-like gasket seals the space between the overlaps.

SKI MOUNTAINEERING

This collection of boots exemplifies Garmont’s a.d.d. (anatomically directed design) philosophy with a closely wrapped outer shell for comfort and performance. Part of the performance package is the High Overlap design that distributes pressure evenly for a progressive flex. It also allows it to move with the skier for easier walking instead of a tongue design that must be bent with each step. Binding systems here are described as Universal or Tech. Tech refers to the metal inserts in the sole for compatibility with Dynafit-like binding systems.

Luster (Uni and Tech systems)
Sizes 23.0 – 27.5
Weight 1510 grams in size 25.5, flex index 120
Garmont says this is the highest performance women’s ski mountaineering boot on the market. Flex and stiffness are tuned for lighter weight skiers.

Radium (Uni and Tech systems)
Sizes 25.0 – 30.5, flex index 130
Weight 1790g in size 27.5

Shogun (New) (Uni and Tech systems)
Sizes 25.0 – 30.5, flex index 130
Weight 1900g in size 27.5
Listed as new this year because tech fittings were added to increase versatility.

Hydra (New) (Uni and Tech systems)
Sizes 23.0 – 27.5
Weight 1565g in size 25.5
Women’s version of Shogun above. Strong enough for serious freeriding but light enough for extended tours. It’s listed as new this year because tech fittings were added.

Helix W (New) (Uni and Tech systems)
Sizes 23.0 – 27.5, flex index 110
Weight 1400 grams in size 25.5
Helix W is a women’s boot based on the Helium boot. Choose Helix for long tours and technical terrain that requires scrambling and crampon work.

Helix (New) (Uni and Tech systems)
Sizes 25.0 – 30.5, flex index 110
Weight 1485 grams in size 27.5
The newest 3-buckle boot that skis like a 4-buckle. Similar mission to Helix W above.

FREERIDE

Freeride boots are meant to be as close to alpine boot performance as possible with all the versatile characteristics of a touring boot. To make that bridge, all Garmont Freeride boots have adjustable cuff canting and the Broadband2 tongue for skiing on the modern, wider skis. It has a smooth flex and a firm injection under the buckles to better distribute pressure. It’s also higher on the inside for better edge control. The cuff is performance-tuned with a ski-walk mechanism that locks in two forward positions for downhill skiing.

Axon (Uni and Tech systems)
Sizes 25.0 – 30.5, flex index 130
Weight 2050g in size 27.5
Axon combines the most aggressive alpine freeride performance with the easy touring of the Tech binding system. The shell has been stiffened with thicker plastic in key areas rather than inserts to keep the weight down.
