ATOMIC SKI BOOTS

Atomic has made several improvements in boot liners this season to compliment the asymmetrical way the foot works in the boot. The padding on the inner side is designed for superior feel and grip in the edging phase of the turn while the padding on the outer surface is perforated to cushion and absorb the phase of reduced pressure and recovery. Even the upper part of the liner is asymmetrical. The new liner is labeled ASY to designate asymmetrical.

RENU bio plastic boot

Atomic calls it the world’s first carbon negative/planet positive ski boot. It’s made to be recycled with minimum landfill impact. Renu is an impressive achievement in the drive to reduce harmful by-products in manufacturing. Although 34kg CO2 is an unavoidable footprint, Atomic offsets that with investment into carbon emission reducing projects for a net positive impact. They calculate fossil fuel use is down 50.8% due to these initiatives. Even the buckles are mostly plastic (it takes 3 times as much energy to produce an aluminum buckle). But the real tour de force is the plastic shell itself. It’s made of Pebax, a versatile plastic composed of 80% castor oil. Pebax is a high performance thermoplastic elastomer that has excellent mechanical and dynamic properties (impact resistance, energy return, fatique resistance) and maintains those properties at low temperatures. It’s also light. Perfect for ski boots. Atomic uses Pebax without pigments so it can be recycled and used in any color again. Other earth-friendly features are recycled foams and textiles in the liner (with bamboo lining), cork footbed and a cotton power strap. RENU will be introduced in two models this year.

RACE BOOTS

Atomic race boots are based on the World Cup chassis and have a 98mm last (distance across the metatarsals). The boot sole is also slightly offset to the inside (1 mm) so the foot is closer to being above the ski edge. The boot axis runs parallel to the ski edge, there is no toe-out.

FREESKI BOOTS

In general Freeski boots are high performance boots with a few special modifications to take the punishment of freeskiing. Usually that means absorbent materials or special support in key areas like tongue and boot board. Atomic’s shock-absorbing feature is called Shockilla.

HAWX

Hawx was introduced a couple of years ago and has expanded into a full line of high performance boots including 4 women’s models. Hawx combines high performance with a more comfortable fit than a race boot, and features a unique dual molding in the lower shell that is designed to flex slightly. Atomic claims this feature supports natural foot function that makes both walking and skiing easier. The number in each model name refers to the flex rating and “W” designates a woman’s boot. Women’s boots have a specially shaped cuff and matching liner. All Hawx are Recco equipped, as are many Atomic boots. Recco is a system that can speed recovery if buried in an avalanche. The Recco antenna in the boot pinpoints the location to rescuers with the right detection equipment.

M  TECH BOOTS

M Tech is a line for recreational and advanced skiers. One of the first clues is that the forefoot last is 102mm wide. Compare that to the Race boots at 98mm. In addition the liners are geared more for comfort and warmth, not grip and performance. In fact the aim of this line is “Comfort and Control.”

B TECH BOOTS

Atomic calls its high volume B Tech 104mm-wide forefoot a “square toe box.” Maybe, but it’s the most anatomical shape for a toe box on the market today. If you are bothered by narrow, pointed toe-shapes in boots, check out B Tech. Your toes will thank you. B Tech is not a high performance line with the possible exception of B Tech 120. This line is devoted to people that are skiing for fun, not fame.
