RACE

In 2008 Fischer ranked number one in constructor’s points on the world cup, claiming 3 overall titles (GS, SL and SuperG). One of the more interesting innovations introduced last year on the World Cup circuit was cutouts in tip and tail of some skis to concentrate mass toward the center.

An additional benefit of the “hole ski” design is that it reduces unwanted vibration which translates into smoother running and better control. The weight savings is significant, as much as 40 grams in tip and 10 grams at the tail. Racing DNA is evident in all race series skis with wood core sandwich sidewall construction throughout.

Technology you should know about The Hole story The holes cut into Fischer ski tips come in three versions depending on the use of the ski. The most obvious is the complete cutout most common on the elite racing models. A second version is the transparent hole, so called because the plastic base is not cut out and covers the hole. That adds a bit of durability and easy running in soft snow but still benefits from the mass reduction which is almost identical to the full cut out. Version 3 is a hole recess for all slope conditions. The mass savings is not quite as great but the ski is more versatile.

This category combines proven race ski construction with a dual radius shape to create skis that have all the performance of an expert ski but more versatility for all mountain skiing. Sidecuts are given as two numbers because two radii are combined in one ski. See explanation below. Note that waists are slightly wider than the race skis.

VIRON ... SPORT PERFORMANCE

Viron is a completely new line for this year that features Dynamic Grip Control Technology. This is a system where 3 elastomer inserts are put into longitudinal cuts in the wood core at tip and tail. It’s a simple system to tailor torsional stiffness at different points along the ski. The result, according to Fischer, is instant and continuous edge grip as well as better control.

Women’s skis from Fischer are under the My Style banner. Usually the binding mounting point is slightly ahead of unisex counterparts and most models use the new and improved Railflex My Style binding interface. It’s lighter and easier to adjust than previous models.

The top 3 models in this series of fat skis features the new Powder Hull. It is designed to part the snow in the same way a speedboat slices through water to improve handling and performance in powder. These skis do not have an integrated binding system, they are “flat.”

SLOPESTYLE

Park and pipe skis must be über-durable so Fischer has developed a special construction for freestyle skis using a Titanal lower and upper shell with a 25° sloped sidewall. Fischer says this is the optimum construction for the park because the edge surface is protected.
