24 Hours

Salomon 24 Hours
Type Racing, Frontside Carving
Lengths Available 154, 162, 170, 178cm
Length Tested 170 cm
Test Conditions Hard Pack to Deep Powder

This ski was subjected to a long-term test that lasted from January to April, approximately 45 days on snow. In that time conditions ranged from hard old snow to 50cm of powder. With a full wood core and two layers of Titanium, the 24 Hours is most at home on the groomed where the performance is fantastic. Edge grip and rebound is smooth and powerful and the 15 meter sidecut strikes a great balance between long and short turns.

Speaking of balance, the recommended boot placement on the ski felt very much center-mounted. After several days of experimenting, a placement of about 1 cm back of that mark seemed to be more versatile. The beauty of the Z12 binding is that it can be quickly and easily adjusted on the slope — even with gloves on. In addition, toe and heel can be adjusted individually. It’s a great system that was made even better by the secure grip sensation of the toepiece.

Several days of knee-deep powder on the 24 Hours was fun and although they are competent, there are better skis these days for the deep and steep.

The Bottom Line: If you live at a cat-skiing lodge, these are not the best choice. If you like front-side cruising and carving, if you appreciate grip, precision and breath-taking performance, the Salomon 24 Hours delivers it all and more.
