BBR 8.9 (New)

Salomon BBR 8.9
Type All-Mountain New Design
Lengths Available 166, 176, 186 cm
Length Tested 186 cm
Test Conditions Soft Packed Powder, -8°C (18°F)
I must admit my expectations were fairly low and I couldn’t stop looking at the huge tips on the chairlift. They look like small surfboards on each foot. But the generous tip sailed through the chopped up old powder with impunity. Just for fun I opened it up just to see how fast I could go and was amazed at how it handled speed, as long as I was turning — not quite so comfy in a tuck.

But let’s face it, the BBR isn’t a race ski. The tail is powerful and the ski carved extremely well given that this is a ski that can do a lot of different things. BBR is a ski whose performance is a lot more conventional than its looks. Salomon calls it “freeride inspired all mountain performance.” There is another versions called BBR 7.9 that is slightly narrower and shorter. BBR 8.9 is a full sandwich wood core ski, 7.9 uses the “edgy monocoque” construction with a wood core.

The Bottom Line: Don’t let the new look put you off. BBR is versatile and powerful in a new kind of way.
