Salomon Boots
Salomon is constantly improving and upgrading boot lines so it is hard to summarize what’s new in a few words. About half the boots in this year’s collection are labeled “new” by Salomon.
A new liner generation is being introduced with a wider cuff opening and more comfort and warmth features. Things like non-sensitive stitching and biovent breathability.
Custom Fit continues, using a special plastic in key areas that is easy to stretch and mold to form a perfect fit. Custom Shell Technology is quite simple. On each side of the forefoot is a special material called Kaprolene. The boot shells can be heated in a special oven, by hot air gun, or by placing in boiling water. When the foot is placed in the boot, the Kaprolene expands to the foot’s shape. After cooling in cold water or snow, the plastic retains its shape and behaves the same as the rest of the shell. It takes about 20 minutes. Custom Shell Technology is found in a number of models including some in the Impact/Idol series of all round boots. Boots with “CS” denote the Custom Shell feature.
In Salomon nomenclature, boot lines are sometimes listed with two words such as Impact/Idol. That refers to men’s and women’s versions, in this example Idol is the women’s version of Impact.
Women’s boots are different in a number of ways. For example Idol has a women-specific cuff shape and special liner. Idol also adds a heel wedge to the cuff and liner while others may include a calf adjustment feature.

Quest is a line of light freeride boots that feature a cuff ratchet and release system and grippy soles for hiking. Some new lighter plastics are in this year’s collection too such as Pebax. All boots in this series feature Ride & Hike technology to making hiking a bit easier too.
