Great Britain’s Olympic team goes broke

Friday, February 5, 2010

Just days before the Vancouver Winter Olympics, the ski and snowboard body supporting British athletes has declared bankruptcy. A contingency plan will ensure that the 14 competitors will be able to take part in the games as planned. Snowsport GB faced a shortfall of $326,000 and was unable to afford ski passes and accommodations to continue athlete training. This was not a complete surprise. Weeks earlier British officials announced that they were preparing plan B for the Olympics in case the federation went broke. About 50 British athletes in 6 sports will participate at the games. In the wake of this collapse it is expected that a dormant company, Team GB will be resuscitated to serve as Britain’s national governing body for skiing and snowboarding
