Peak Performance Ski Tip 11

Turn Feet, Not Torso- by Martin Olson

It’s easy to say and easy to see, but not so easy to do; the demonstrator is turning his skis but somehow his body continues in the general downhill direction.

It’s one of the key goals of every skier advancing into all-mountain skiing but how can it be learned?

  1. Watch expert skiers, study images such as this one and mentally rehearse the kind of movements. There is evidence that mental rehearsal can influence learning of motor patterns.
  2. Focus on skiing with the feet. Notice that the pros do not use the upper body to swing the skis around. Modern skis turn by edging, not pivoting.
  3. Practice in gentle bumps first, turn on tops to make it a lot easier.
  4. Take a lesson with a good pro that can assign drills tailored for your stage of development.
