Elite competitors often have more than one pair of boots, each one optimized for a specific discipline. That is in contrast to the average skier with one pair that must work in a variety of conditions. But what if that one pair is a stiff performance model that is great on the groomed but not so great in bumps?
There is a work-around to deal with those big slushy bumps when you really need more ankle movement. To stay in balance the other joints must bend more. The result is a very low torso that looks extreme but it works. There is an easy test you can perform. With boots on, stand on a hard surface without skis and bend the maximum amount without losing balance.
Ideally you should be able to get thighs almost parallel to the floor. Explore the range of movement until you can flex fully and maintain balance.
